THE DULL RED GLOW IN THE SKY SLOWLY GREW BRIGHTER UNTIL FLAMES OUTLINED A WAVERING, SMOKY RIDGELINE. Scarlett, Tasha and Luther watched, mesmerized. The dog, constantly watching the shadows, started whining and then barking, as something leaped out of the darkness. Scarlett let out a startled little scream as a singed calico cat landed on her shoulders, claws out. “Ow!” Scarlett laughed, pulling the cat off her shoulders and cuddling it against her chest. The dog continued barking at the cat. “Oh, shush Gypsy dog. No need to be jealous.”

“Gypsy dog?” Tasha asked, laughing at the spectacle she just witnessed.

“I thought it was an appropriate name for this beautiful hound.”

Scarlett turned to Luther. “Does this cat belong to Dutch?”

Luther shrugged. “No idea. I’ve never seen it.”

“She’s petrified.”

“Probably of the dog,” Tasha said.

“Or the fire,” Scarlett replied. “Look at her fur.”

“You must have some special way with animals,” Luther said. Scarlett smiled as she cooed at the cat and petted the dog.

“Are there any more bins that have to be loaded into the truck?” Tasha asked.

“A few.” Luther said.

“Do you need help?” Scarlett called out as Tasha and Luther ran off.

“Stay with the animals,” Luther shouted back.

Meanwhile Juniper found Buster and Homer slumped on the sofa. “Any news?” she said breathlessly.

“Nope. Just to be prepared to evacuate. Where are we gonna go, anyway?” Homer asked.

“I don’t know yet. Dutch is making some calls, but we’ll probably just drive over to Garberville and see what happens. Do they say the roads are clear?”

“I think so. Haven’t said they’re not.”

“Are you feeling okay, Homer?”

“I took a little off the pipe. But will I have enough if I need more?”

“I packed the stash Dutch has for you. It’s in the car.”

Homer patted Juniper’s arm. “You’re an angel, thinking of me through all this.”

“Hey what happened to that dog?” Buster asked.

“She’s with Scarlett. You guys okay to just sit tight here for now?”

Buster and Homer nodded. Buster had taken out his guitar and was picking a tune. “We’re doing just fine,” Buster answered.

Juniper decided to take one more quick walk around the whole house to see if she’d forgotten anything important when Dutch approached her. “I’m having a hard time reaching some people. I guess everyone’s busy packing up their stuff. Where’s the fire now?” Dutch asked.

“Last I heard it’s just over the Buttes, but the wind is coming out of the north so we are in the path.”

“Hopefully the wind will shift. We’ll just drive south. I’ll still try to reach some friends of mine who live far enough from the fire and may have space for the bins.”

Juniper went back outside. The smoke was now making it hard to breathe and she worried about Homer’s ability to withstand it. She blinked her stinging eyes and saw Scarlett coming towards her with something in her arms. “Who’s that?”

“Minnie. Isn’t she beautiful?”

Luther drove up in the truck. “All packed and ready to go,” he said as he climbed out.

Buster came outside. “Holy shit!” they heard Buster cry out in the dark.
